About this book
The fighting along the Tigris receives a close account from Edward John Thompson, a padre who lived and worked with the 2nd Leicestershires. His narrative concentrates on the campaigns for Samarra and Tekrit during the First World War in Mesopotamia. Drawing on his notebooks, regimental diaries and conversations with officers, he sets out to give the battalion a fuller place in the record of operations beyond Baghdad.
Campaign history shares space with the pressures of daily service. Thompson describes difficult ground, exhausting weather, delays and the comradeship that helped men endure them. In the Samarra account, his own attempts to care for wounded men sit beside reports of advancing troops, captured guns and prisoners. Readers interested in the Iraq campaign will find a participant’s account shaped by practical detail and concern for how events were reported.
