About this book
This combined edition of two volumes gives the life and letters of Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq, Seigneur of Bousbecque, knight and imperial ambassador. The family background is set out in detail: George Ghiselin II. sought to revive the cloth trade at Bousbecque, where a charter of 1352 had given the inhabitants the right to make cloth, and in 1531 he obtained a renewal of the privilege from Charles V.
A document from the archives of Lille, printed in the Appendix as the Pardon of Daniel de Croix, describes a hawking meeting in the meadows below the castle in the summer of 1519. Footnotes explain details such as scordium, a herb, and an electuary, a medicine of pasty consistence. The index lists the Aga of the Janissaries, Aigues-Mortes, Akschehr, and Albacar, a Spanish physician sent by Busbecq to Lemnos.
