About this book
John Horace Round's Geoffrey de Mandeville is a study built on charters and chronicles. It includes a facsimile of the charter creating Geoffrey de Mandeville, and the transcriber's note mentions the Empress' Charter in Chapter 4, genealogical tables, and Appendices K and U.
The pages weigh dates and witnesses. One discussion dates a charter of Stephen to St. Frideswide's, issued at Oxford and now kept in the Bodleian Library, by the names of William of Ypres and Richard de Luci, and suggests it belongs to the siege of 1142 rather than to 1135. Notes cite chroniclers such as Matthew Paris, William of Newburgh and the Gesta Stephani, quote Latin passages, and one gives him as comes Essexe. Another stretch prints the Latin text of a grant to Earl Geoffrey that mentions the custody of a castle and several named men, among them William son of Walter and Matheus de Rumilli.
