About this book
The title page identifies George Cavendish as the cardinal’s gentleman usher and states that the life comes from the original autograph manuscript. The edition announces notes and other illustrations by Samuel Weller Singer as part of its presentation of the life. The narrator says that he received the account of an embassy from its subject’s own mouth after his fall, while attending upon him.
The earl assures the lord that the king has appointed a discreet gentleman to conduct him safely and bears him a special favour beyond what he supposes. The lord answers that he submits himself to fortune and describes himself as a true man.
