About this book

Samuel Pepys and the World He Lived In is a book by Henry B. Wheatley. A chapter headed London opens with the words "I have vow'd to spend all my life in London. People do really live no where else". The text says that in 1666 Pepys was called up at three o'clock to see a fire, but not thinking much of it, he went to bed again.

The text says Alderman Starling, whose house was saved by the Navy Office men, gave 2 s. 6 d. to be divided among thirty of them. A list of names with years includes, among others, Fairfax, George, 1677, Falkener, John, Woolwich Ropeyard, 1664, and Feilding, Captain Henry, 1682. The text says the three thousand volumes of which the library consisted were, with the original bookcases, removed to the college, and deposited in the new buildings which Pepys had assisted to build.
