About this book
The Life of Col. James Gardiner is by Philip Doddridge. The text says that, in the year 1702, if its information is right, an ensign's commission came from queen Anne and was borne in the battle of Ramillies, in the nineteenth year of the bearer's age. The text says, on the information the writer has received, that after his remarkable conversion a challenge was declined with the reply "I fear sinning, though you know I do not fear fighting."
The text says that a wound in the mouth from a musket-ball has often been reported to be the occasion of the conversion, and calls that report a mistaken one. The text says that he abhorred every thing that looked like a contrivance to keep his soldiers employed with their horses and their arms at the seasons of public worship. The text says that the picture given at the beginning of these memoirs was taken from an original done by Van Deest in the year 1727, which was the 40th of his age, and is said to have been very like him then.
