About this book
The Life of Rev. David Brainerd, Chiefly Extracted from His Diary presents a somewhat abridged life drawn chiefly from the diary named in its title. A diary entry describes discourse in the catechetical method, comparing man’s present and primitive states and pressing sinners to consider their circumstances without Christ. The entry records tears and sobs among many in the assembly and says the impressions made upon them seemed deep and affecting.
The personal account describes distress at the thought of renouncing the self and standing before God stripped of all goodness, a prospect the writer found dreadful. A diary entry about a day with the Indians on an island records an attempt to gather them for instruction and their gathering of conjurers near noon.
