About this book
The Life of Sir John Falstaff is by Robert B. Brough, illustrated by George Cruikshank, with a biography of the knight, from authentic sources. A notice says that the Life of Sir John Falstaff will be published monthly, and completed in 10 parts, containing 2 plates in each part. The writer's dedication is to Mary E. C. Brough and opens 'My dearest Sister'.
A speaker says that if he has not fifty silver marks by Wednesday, he is a dead man. The text turns to the supposition that Sir William Gascoigne, when a struggling law-student, was possibly greatly indebted to the maternal or sisterly hospitality of Mrs. Quickly. The text says there is the amplest corroborative evidence, in the pages of various contemporary historians, that the substance of a speech was as follows. The speech as given reads 'I know thee not, old man! Fall to thy prayers. How ill white hairs become a fool and jester!'
