About this book
W. W. Jacobs is the author of Good Intentions, which carries illustrations from drawings by Will Owen. A night-watchman, trying to sneer, calls something pure jealousy, and the text notes he had left his broom for a hurried half-pint at the "Bull's Head". The night-watchman says that ever since he was married the missis has been setting traps for him, and asking people to keep an eye on him.
The night-watchman names Cap'n Tarbell as the man he tried to do a good turn to, a man what used to be master of a ketch called the Lizzie and Annie. The night-watchman says they went to the Pagoda Music-'all on a bus, and that it was the first evening out he had had for years, one he would have enjoyed if it had not been for Miss Lamb. The cap'n goes on talking and says he is no mischief-maker and that as far as he is concerned the night-watchman can take this lady to a music-hall every night of the week if he likes.
