About this book

A spider's burrow becomes a piece of engineering under Jean-Henri Fabre's close scrutiny. Beginning with the Black-bellied Tarantula, this natural history book examines hunting habits, shelters and the beliefs that make spiders objects of fear. Fabre sets accounts of alarming bites beside his interest in instinct, and includes Léon Dufour's detailed description of a tunnel with a bend, a raised entrance and a silken lining.

Later observations turn to the care of eggs and young. Fabre tests a mother spider's response to an artificial nest, watches a mother guarding her brood, and follows the young as they gather among twigs and begin laying threads between objects. The appeal lies in the scale of the investigation: small movements become evidence about behaviour. Readers can follow the questions and practical experiments of an observer trying to understand how spiders build, hunt and rear their offspring.
