About this book

The account contrasts knowledge of the scorpion preserved in spirits of wine with the animal's scarcely known behaviour within the domain of its instincts. Scorpion keepers are told to take serious precautions when spending whole years with animals that might escape and hide among utensils. The cage uses a wire cover set deep into an earthenware pan, with wet clay packed into the circular space between them.

The feeding arrangement provides a small opening at the top of the trellis through which live game can be slipped without moving the cover. The displaced family members regain their places, grasping the fringes of their support and using the tail as a lever. The carpet that supports climbing lasts without dislocation for nearly a week, until emancipation, and falls away of its own accord.
