About this book
The Life of the Spirit and the Life of To-day is by Evelyn Underhill. The preface says the book began when, in the autumn of 1921, the authorities of Manchester College, Oxford invited the author to deliver the inaugural course of a lectureship in religion. The author says the aim is to discuss some of the implicits which the author believes underlie human effort and achievement in the domain of the spiritual life.
Miguel de Unamuno is quoted as confessing: I believe in God as I believe in my friends, because I feel the breath of His affection. The text says some explanation is needed of these often strange symbolic systems, and often rigid mechanizations, imposed on the free responses to Eternal Reality. The text pictures a group that would take up a definite piece of social work, or some definite question, specially its own, and make its weight felt, either locally or nationally.
