About this book
The title page reads Hegel's Philosophy of Mind, translated from the Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences, with five introductory essays by William Wallace of Merton College, Oxford, 1894. The essays are titled On the Scope of a Philosophy of Mind, Aims and Methods of Psychology, On Some Psychological Aspects of Ethics, Psycho-Genesis and Ethics and Politics.
The contents divide the text into Mind Subjective, with Anthropology, Phenomenology of Mind and Psychology, and Mind Objective, with Law, The Morality of Conscience and The Moral Life, or Social Ethics. Mind is described as an elevation above nature, and language as the system of signs by which intelligence makes external objects its own. A later passage discusses the imputation of pantheism or atheism to philosophy, and says the religious consciousness does not comprehend itself.
