About this book

In a Berkshire village, fourteen-year-old Josiah Shirley faces the mockery of George and William Hope, the wealthy neighbour's disobedient sons. Raised by his Quaker grandmother, Josiah answers their unkindness with patience and urges them to change their conduct. Their quarrel takes a concrete form when the brothers enter Mrs. Shirley's meadow and mistreat her animals, drawing Josiah into a confrontation over cruelty and forgiveness.

Susanna Moodie's tale for young readers builds its lessons through village encounters, family discipline and moments of danger. A later skating scene puts Josiah's principles to the test when George disregards a warning about thin ice. The narrator also cautions against judging people on suspicion alone. Readers interested in children's moral fiction will find a story concerned with kindness to animals, restraint under provocation and the practical demands of returning good for ill.
