About this book
The Monctons by Susanna Moodie is a novel whose narrator recalls the distress of seeing the box containing his mother's body being removed from home. The boy struggles with his nurse and cries out that the men must not be allowed to take his mother away. A gentleman's cold, contemptuous gaze silences the boy and awakens a feeling of defiance and resistance in the narrator's heart.
The narrator receives a note from Mr. Moncton explaining that fine linen and fashionable clothes are intended for his use, with further gifts added. The narrator's pleasure is troubled by accepting favours from someone he neither loves nor respects, while conscience urges poverty and independence over compromised integrity.
