About this book
Nine-year-old Bob Trevor takes his role as the Skipper seriously, especially when sailing a model of his father's vessel on the lake beside their New Forest home. His younger sister, Dot, shares the outing, carrying the hooked sticks used to guide the boat. A makeshift boiler and clockwork machinery give Bob plenty to fuss over, while his teasing exposes the difference between his bold manner and Dot's trust in him.
George Manville Fenn's children's story brings nautical play into the life of a sailor's family. Captain Trevor's visits matter deeply to Bob, and a missed farewell leaves the boy convinced that his father has gone away angry. The middle excerpt follows his distress and his attempt to buy a train ticket to Portsmouth.
