The Man with a Shadow is by George Manville Fenn. Chapter One is headed "The Curate Grows Suspicious; and Takes his Stick." A speaker addressed as "miss" tells Dally Watlock that she is growing too light and free, and that her conduct is far from becoming for a maid-servant at the Rectory. In a chapter headed Science at Work, Horace North, described as more of the student than the athlete, is borne against a table by a ruffian and finds the help of science in the shape of a pestle of marble.

A girl called Dally says Doctor North is a fool, or he would not be courting and making love to Miss Leo. A doctor tells Mary that Dr North is not in a fit condition to be at large and that his nearest friends have taken steps to have him placed under proper treatment, and Mary answers indignantly that it is not true.

George Manville Fenn

George Manville Fenn (1831-1909) was an English novelist, journalist, editor and educationalist. Many of his novels were written with young readers in mind, among them "The Black Tor" and "Devon Boys". His last book was a biography of George Alfred Henty, another writer for the young.
