About this book

A weaver, a carpenter and a ploughman celebrate their earnings at a tavern, spending freely on wine, meat and cakes. Kahlil Gibran turns this ordinary scene into a sharp parable of ambition in a collection that moves between brief tales, personal addresses and verse. Elsewhere, joy becomes a fragile living companion, and defeat becomes a source of courage and self-knowledge.

The pieces return to the distance between outward appearances and private experience. A speaker addresses a friend while guarding an inner life; a newborn protests in a language the adults around him cannot understand. Along the shore, people handle salt, sugar, shadows and sea foam in scenes that give different ways of thinking a visible shape. Readers interested in philosophical and spiritual writing can find here compact stories whose everyday objects carry arguments about solitude, belief and the limits of understanding.
