About this book

A servant asks his queen to exchange conquest and distant courts for the tending of her garden. That conversation opens Rabindranath Tagore's collection of short poems, translated by the author from Bengali into English. Flowers, birds, boats and village roads recur as images through which speakers express affection, hesitation and longing. A poet with greying hair listens for the needs of the village, while a caged bird and a forest bird struggle to imagine sharing a life.

The numbered pieces move between dialogue and intimate personal speech. In the middle poems, a speaker resists giving up home and companionship for solitude, and another weighs the memory of a lost love against the little time left for living. The gardener suits readers who enjoy brief poems built around a scene or an exchange of voices. Its changing speakers leave room for both the pleasure of closeness and the difficulty of making feelings understood.

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a Bengali poet, composer, painter, and thinker whose reshaping of literature and music left a lasting mark on the subcontinent. In 1913 he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and he wrote the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh.
