About this book

The Magic Egg, and Other Stories is by Frank R. Stockton. The contents list names stories that include, among others, The Widow’s Cruise, Captain Eli’s Best Ear and Love Before Breakfast. Under the heading The Magic Egg, the text tells of a pretty little theatre attached to the building of the Unicorn Club, hired for a certain January afternoon by Mr. Herbert Loring. A character named Loring, now almost shouting, tells someone that they have shown the strength of their lungs and to jump down on the seat of the chair, now on the table.

A character named Uncle Beamish says that he hates to make a journey before breakfast, especially on Christmas morning, but that somehow or other there seems to be something jolly about the business. A woman named Miss Burroughs asks Dr. Glover how he is going to keep himself warm, and he replies that his long ulster will be enough.
