About this book
Yorkshire speech gives John Hartley's collection its sound, from the spelling of everyday conversation to the exchanges between neighbours. The opening Christmas story places Tom and Susy on an icy road to the factory, where a late arrival could leave them waiting outside in bitter weather. Their earnings support a household strained by illness, and Tom's efforts to help Susy bring the family's hardship into close view.
Elsewhere, the mood turns comic: a narrator prepares a tea gathering for roughly twenty people, only for a neighbour's cat to carry away part of the meal. Gossip, misunderstandings and pride in cooking shape the scene. These short stories offer both domestic humour and concern for working families, with dialect doing much of the storytelling.
