Lawrence Blakeley, a Washington lawyer, boards a Pullman sleeping car to carry evidence for an important case, only to wake and find the papers gone, his clothes swapped, and a fellow passenger stabbed to death in lower ten, the very berth he was meant to occupy. Suspicion lands squarely on Blakeley, and a violent train wreck soon complicates matters further. Rinehart braids the murder plot with romance and a streak of comedy as her narrator scrambles to clear his own name. About the Author
Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876 to 1958) was an American writer often called the American Agatha Christie, though her mysteries came first. A trained nurse turned bestselling novelist and wartime correspondent, she popularized the Had I But Known narrative style and the crime-solving spinster heroine.
