About this book
The Truce of God is a book by Mary Roberts Rinehart, with decorations by Harold Sichel. A scene is set on the day of the birth of our Lord, which dawned that year grey and dreary, and a Saturday. The young overlord sulks in his castle at the cliff top and bites his nails. The text says Mother Church had decreed peace, a Truce of God, from Thursday evening of each week to the morning of Monday.
Clotilde comes barefoot along stone floors to Charles the Fair, who has taken himself to bed. Clotilde ventures, "It is the anniversary of the birth of our Lord." The Abbot, who had gained both wisdom and humility, says "A child of the Lord."
