About this book
An old man, Hamed bin Ayyub, a dragoman, tells a listener he addresses as effendi why he limps. They sit in the coffee-shop of Silat, where he calls for pipes and coffee. He recalls that he was once Hamed the Attar, a seller of scents, cosmetics and henna whose customers were mostly women, and that his father, an Imam, warned him again and again to beware of women who signal with the eyes and hands.
Another passage has an old slave setting out conditions for her lady: a secret marriage is refused, but a wedding in Jerusalem would reach the lady's cousin the sheik, so she asks Hamed to sell all his possessions and take her to Damascus. A note addressed to Hamed the Attar says that food, utensils, water and coffee are under the mat and that his foot should be well enough for travel within ten days, and Hamed says he stayed ten days.
