About this book
On the evening a ship leaves Zanzibar, a young clergyman sits down beside Père Etienne, a Catholic priest bound for India after almost twenty-seven years in Africa. Their conversation turns from the distant mainland to the older man's memories of his work there. Robert Keable frames this short story through their meeting on deck, moving from the habits of first-class passengers to an account of faith in an inland town.
The priest recalls Mwezi, an old man who once travelled for two years after dreaming of a stranger in a black robe. Convinced that he had reached the town shown in his dream, Mwezi settled there and continued to wait. His expectation draws the attention of the townspeople and leaves the visiting priest reflecting on the strength of his conviction. The story offers readers interested in religious fiction a close account of belief, patience and the effort to understand another person's experience.
