About this book

Edward Everett Hale wrote The Man Without a Country; a frontispiece caption has a man crying out in a fit of frenzy that he wishes he may never hear of the United States again. The text says that "Any man is without a country who, by his sneers, or by looking backward, or by revealing his country's secrets to her enemy, checks for one hour the movements which lead to peace among the nations of the world". The text says there is no need now for a man to curse the United States, as Philip Nolan did.

A narrator sorts the traditions from the myths told about this man for forty years, and says the lies told about him are legion. The fellows used to say he was the Iron Mask. A note says the last despatch of Captain Hunt shows that he intended to take a northern course heading eastward toward the coast of California rather than southward toward the Equator.
