About this book
A challenge delivered at a forest cabin brings Captain John Ireton's private grievances into a Carolina evening. His old friend Richard Jennifer arrives as the messenger for Sir Francis Falconnet, then drops his stiff formalities over supper. Their talk turns from the proposed duel to advancing troops and uncertain allegiances. Ireton's experience in overseas service sits beside his anger over a friend's death, giving the opening both military and personal stakes.
Francis Lynde builds this historical novel around two gentlemen who love the same woman. During a tense encounter, Ireton and Jennifer watch a troop camp where Margery may be in danger. They argue over when to act, study the camp and consider recovering her horse and saddle. The dialogue makes their friendship as important as the action: one presses for speed while the other insists on preparation. Woodland encounters, tense decisions and a love rivalry give readers a close view of adventure in the two Carolinas.
