About this book

Masked archers interrupt Sir Aymer de Lacy's first day at Windsor, taking his valuables with elaborate courtesy before a brief struggle leaves him wounded. The encounter introduces a knight whose quick temper and ready wit make even a roadside robbery a contest of manners. John Reed Scott sets this historical novel in England during the rule of the House of York, combining forest adventure with the company of nobles and royalty.

Aymer's attachment to Beatrix brings another kind of danger. Their betrothal is kept within a small circle, while Sir John de Bury warns that her wealth and many suitors may stir resentment against the King's favored newcomer. Conversations with King Richard mix teasing familiarity with suspicions surrounding an abbey. Readers interested in historical romance will find courtly speech, personal loyalties and the uneasy connection between affection, property and royal favor.
