About this book
The Mayas, the Sources of Their History is by Stephen Salisbury and carries the heading Dr. Le Plongeon in Yucatan, his account of discoveries. The text quotes Don Manuel Orosco y Berra, who says of the Indian inhabitants that their revengeful and tenacious character makes of the Mayas an exceptional people. A quoted account has a Franciscan, Thomas de Soza, stating that twenty leagues from the city of Mérida, between Muna, Ticul and Noxcacab, are the remains of some stone edifices, one of which the natives call Oxmutal.
A first-person account says the speaker made the church of Pisté his head-quarters, where the party went every night to sleep, returning always at daylight to Chichen, one league distant. The text describes Mariano Chablé, the same old man, to whom they give 150 years at least, yet who enjoys perfect health and still works at his trade as a potter.
