About this book
The study takes the birth of civilization in the Near East as its subject, setting aside the abstract question of how civilization became possible. The discussion gives the emergence of Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilization some claim to being considered the birth of civilization in a general sense. The comparison names only three known instances where the transition may have been spontaneous: the ancient Near East, China, and South and Middle America.
The account of Sumer finds no sign of loyalties beyond the city and says no political institution overarched the sovereignty of the separate cities. The discussion suggests that Sargon allotted parts of temple communities’ lands to his followers, overriding the local basis of land rights.
