About this book
The Memoirs of Count Carlo Gozzi, Volume the Second, is translated into English by John Addington Symonds. An elderly housekeeper twits the narrator with rustic manners and passes to sharp but motherly reproof, saying that in a youngster of from sixteen to seventeen, like the narrator, the sobriety of a man of fifty had all the effect of caricature. When Signora Ricci arrives, the narrator visits her and hears her say that her husband goes on spitting blood and that she is living in hourly dread for herself and her poor children.
The index lists entries such as Illyria, the nature of the country; Improvisation, Gozzi's views on; and I Rozzi, a company at Siena, who performed farces. The index also lists Hogarth, William, contrasted with Pietro Longhi.
