About this book
Kate Norgate's history covers the early years of Henry the Third's reign. Its transcriber's note explains that year sidenotes were moved to the start of paragraphs and footnotes to the end of chapters. In the year 1217, once the treaty of Kingston is made, both sides set about carrying it out: lands are restored to men who return to the King's allegiance, and Louis and Henry together summon Alexander of Scotland to give up the English lands he seized.
The Legate goes to London on 27 October and punishes the clergy who had supported Louis, breaking up altars and chalices, burning vestments and depriving old canons of their benefices. Another passage discusses a council in London and a summons to Northampton, with Falkes saying the summons was for a muster in arms and a later statement by Hubert seeming to confirm it. A further passage describes the English fleet at Sandwich, eighteen or at most twenty-two ships of any size, as a larger fleet sweeps round Thanet with Eustace's ship leading.
