About this book
Kate Norgate's Richard the Lion Heart carries a year in the margin of each page and numbered footnotes, according to its transcriber's note, which says the footnotes are gathered at the end and the errata applied.
One passage describes an agreement between Richard and William, king of Scots, in which William gives ten thousand marks, and Richard gives up the customs and agreements King Henry had forced from William, returns charters, and promises to treat him as earlier kings treated Malcolm. Another passage describes a dispute over who should be emperor in Germany: some magnates nominated Richard, a few proposed Philip of France, and most inclined to Duke Henry of Saxony, Richard's sister's son, for whom Richard worked through his representatives at Cologne. A third deals with Aloysia, the French king's sister, and a plan to give her to John instead of Richard.
