About this book

Matthew Lewis was barely twenty when he wrote this lurid Gothic tale, and its shocking reputation followed him for the rest of his life. Ambrosio is the celebrated abbot of a Madrid monastery, admired across the city for his piety, until a disguised newcomer breaches the walls of his cloister and his self-control collapses. What begins as private weakness spirals into deception, murder, and a bargain with the devil himself. Lewis piles on ruined convents, restless spirits, and the legend of the Bleeding Nun, delighting in every transgression his contemporaries found so scandalous. Behind the sensationalism sits a sharp attack on religious hypocrisy and repression. Feverish, cruel, and genuinely unsettling, it helped define the darkest edge of the Gothic.
