About this book

Dickens died leaving this novel half finished, and the puzzle at its heart has never been solved. John Jasper, a respected cathedral choirmaster with a secret opium habit, is consumed by desire for Rosa Bud, the young woman engaged to his own nephew Edwin Drood. When Edwin vanishes one stormy night after a tense reconciliation, suspicion falls in several directions and the truth is left forever open. What survives shows Dickens working in a darker, more psychological register, thick with atmosphere and menace. Published in 1870, the unfinished manuscript has invited endless theories and rival completions.
