The Narcotic Drug Problem is by Ernest S. Bishop. Chapter IV is headed The Mechanism of Narcotic Drug Addiction-Disease. Bishop writes that he has adopted the hypothesis that an antidotal substance is manufactured by the body as a protection against the poisonous effects of narcotic drugs constantly administered. Bishop says a hypothetical antidotal toxic substance, manufactured by the body, will explain the well-known development of tolerance and immunity in these cases.
Bishop writes of another legitimate use of narcotics, the intelligent administration of opiate in the control and therapeutic handling of whatever cases of addiction are found to exist. The text says the situation within the army as regards addiction is, in the general indications for its handling, identical with the situation existing in civil life. Bishop says neither the one set of attributes nor the other is peculiar to narcotic addicts, and that they are personal attributes possessed by different men and types of men who may or may not be narcotic addicts.
