About this book

Mental Diseases: A Public Health Problem is a book by James Vance May. The writer says it can, he thinks, be said without any fear of contradiction that no other disease or group of diseases is of equal importance from a social or economic point of view. The text describes the second examination of the first million recruits drafted in 1917, and says twelve per cent of these were rejected on account of nervous or mental diseases.

The text says that earlier writers on insanity mentioned brief initial attacks of excitement as usually ushering in the disease. The text says an education may enable a man to solve abstruse intellectual problems, and yet leave him so hopelessly unable to cope with a bereavement, an unsuccessful love affair or difficult marriage relations.
