About this book
Borders and governments were changing rapidly when E. Alexander Powell and his wife traveled through southeastern Europe in 1919. Published in 1920, his account follows their route by motor car and naval vessel through territories reshaped after the First World War. Powell explains that he wanted to see how people responded to new rulers and national boundaries, from South Tyrol and Fiume to Albania and the wider Balkans.
Political argument shares the pages with close observations of travel. At Antivari, Powell describes street life and two men whose guarded conversation catches his attention. In Valona, Italian officers supply window screens, quinine and bottled water against the risk of malaria. These scenes give the account a practical texture alongside its questions about sovereignty. Readers interested in the region's history can use it as a contemporary traveler's view of the unsettled months after the armistice.
