About this book
Fighting in Flanders is a book by E. Alexander Powell, named as Special Correspondent of The New York World With The Belgian Forces In The Field. The front matter includes the words To My Friends The Belgians. The contents list includes, among others, chapters titled The Coming Of The British and The Fall Of Antwerp.
One gentleman, halted while endeavouring to reach the firing line in a decrepit cab, informed the officer before whom he was taken that he represented the Ladies' Home Journal of Philadelphia. The British War Office at first announced that under no considerations would any correspondents be permitted in the areas where British troops were operating. Van Hee jumped on the seat and shouted that he was the American Consul and that these men were under his protection. The text says that, as a whole, the Belgian troops bore themselves, in this desperate and trying situation, with a courage and coolness deserving of the highest admiration.
