About this book
Catherine Crowe asks how reports of ghosts might fit into an understanding of nature and the human spirit. Her 1850 inquiry brings philosophical argument together with accounts of unusual experiences. The opening considers ancient ideas about wandering spirits, then argues for patient observation of phenomena that challenge accepted explanations. Its chapter headings range from dreams and warnings to doubles, haunted houses and spectral lights.
In her discussion of Miss Lee, Crowe examines competing explanations for a reported vision connected with the hour of a death. She considers illness, coincidence and fright, repeatedly testing what each interpretation assumes about the account. The result gives readers both ghost reports and a sustained argument about how to weigh them. For readers interested in nineteenth-century spiritual thought, the book shows an author using testimony, analogy and close debate to defend inquiry into experiences she considers worthy of investigation.
