About this book

Newly graduated from a New York college, John Redmond expects to put his engineering training to work in the Western mountains. News of his uncle's death at the hands of Kentucky Nightriders changes his plans. Taking the name Jack Wade, he buys a cabin and land in the valley, determined to grow tobacco in defiance of the local farmers' association and settle the family score.

The valley also brings him into contact with Nora Judson, a tobacco planter's daughter whose direct manner catches his attention. Their growing attachment runs alongside threats, burned property and the secrecy surrounding local feuds. McConnell moves between Wade's fierce private resolve, conversations in regional dialect and small scenes of farm life. Readers find a Kentucky adventure in which affection and ordinary companionship press against a young man's consuming desire for revenge.
