About this book
At Mountain Glen in northern Massachusetts, Fostina Woodman grows up among wooded hills, gardens and river valleys. Her mother has died, and Aunt Aubrey helps care for her and her brothers. Lewis Mortimer, a frequent visitor to the family, becomes attached to Fostina. When he and two of her brothers sail for California, separation brings uncertainty, while her cousin Rineldo seeks her love.
Avis A. Burnham Stanwood combines romance and adventure with family pressure, disturbing news and concealed motives. Fostina falls ill after receiving news of Lewis's death. As she recovers, Rineldo again offers marriage, but she holds to her affection for Lewis. Detailed landscapes and strongly expressed grief give the novel its emotional character.
