The Ocean at the End of the Lane

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman is a short, dreamlike novel about a man returning to his childhood home for a funeral and finding himself remembering events that should not have been possible. The novel is partly about memory, partly about childhood, and partly about the kinds of forces children sometimes glimpse but never quite name.

One of the best things Gaiman has written. Short enough to read in an afternoon.
