The Old Man and the Sea is Ernest Hemingway's short novel about an aging Cuban fisherman, Santiago, who has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish. Encouraged by Manolin, the boy who once fished with him, Santiago rows far out into the Gulf Stream and hooks an enormous marlin. For three days he fights the fish alone, and then has to defend his catch from sharks on the way home. Hemingway wrote the book in Cuba in early 1951, and it was published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction published in his lifetime, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953, and Hemingway received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. A story of endurance, pride and loss told in plain, spare language.
