About this book

Theodor Storm's early novella is a quiet meditation on love that time and circumstance let slip away. An old man named Reinhard sits alone at evening and remembers his childhood devotion to Elisabeth, the games and small promises of two people who once assumed they would share a life. Study takes him away, and in his absence family pressure steers her toward a wealthier friend. When Reinhard visits the couple's lakeside estate years later, the gulf between what was and what might have been settles over everything, caught in the famous image of a white water lily just out of reach. Spare and deeply felt, it remains Storm's best loved tale. This free PDF and EPUB edition offers it to read at no cost.
