About this book

United States Presidents' Inaugural Speeches collects the inaugural addresses of the presidents of the United States from George Washington to George W. Bush, 1789 to 2005. The contents name each address, starting with Washington's first and second inaugural addresses and John Adams, and including Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe and Andrew Jackson, among others.

In one passage a speaker asks whether man can be trusted with the government of himself, and then whether he can be trusted with the government of others, or whether angels in the forms of kings have been found to govern him. In another the speaker says the United States has not sought to dominate or absorb any of its weaker neighbors but rather to encourage them to establish free and stable governments. A further passage says America is never wholly herself unless she is engaged in high moral principle, and speaks of the homeless and of children who have nothing.
