About this book
The Ordinance of Covenanting is by John Cunningham, A.M. The volume is inscribed to the Reverend Andrew Symington, D.D., professor of divinity in the Reformed Presbyterian Church. The contents list a first chapter on the nature of covenanting.
In the text the term is defined: covenanting is entering solemnly into the Covenant of Grace, as an individual or in a social capacity, or renewing it. Among the reasons given for social covenanting is that it is approved in Scripture and confers descending obligation, and the text points to Abimelech asking Abraham to enter into a covenant with him. Another passage speaks of thousands assembled in Edinburgh, with prayer and fasting, where the covenant was sworn and subscribed, and of the motto on the banners of the Scottish people, For Christ's Crown and Covenant.
