About this book

The preface sets out an account of the finger-print method of personal identification, tracing its genesis from a discovery in Bengal in 1858. The dedication offers an old story of finger-printing's beginnings and praises developments of its original applications for the sterner needs of justice.

The method described takes seal-like impressions in common seal ink from the markings on the two forefingers of the right hand, selected only for convenience. The writer reports that, barring accidents, the marks do not change over ten or fifteen years enough to affect the usefulness of the test. The account reports testing the process in a jail, a registering office and among pensioners for some months.
