About this book
The Science of Fingerprints, subtitled Classification and Uses, comes from the Federal Bureau of Investigation within the United States Department of Justice, with John Edgar Hoover as Director. Its introduction says the booklet was prepared for interested law enforcement officers and agencies, particularly those thinking of starting fingerprint identification files, and that it sets out fully the systems used in the Bureau's Identification Division.
Sections of the book cover the classification formula, with letters for whorl types such as plain whorl, double loop, central pocket loop and accidental, and the use of a ridge count. Others mention missing persons, the exchange of identifying data with foreign bureaus, a file on footprints, a card index of nicknames, and the fingerprint camera, with notes on photographing prints on glass, mirrors and polished metal and on side lighting for prints in putty, wax or soap.
