About this book
P. N. Ure, M.A., of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and professor of classics at University College, Reading, is named on the title page of The Origin of Tyranny, dated Cambridge, 1922. The book carries figures, among them early Aeginetan coins called tortoises.
One chapter, headed Argos, takes up Pheidon, the one tyrant of Argos, quoting Herodotus on Leokedes, son of Pheidon. Another passage draws on Ephorus for Pheidon's dealings with Aegina and the lot of Temenos. Footnotes elsewhere cite Delphi, the Alcmaeonidae, the Peisistratids and Cleisthenes. Another passage reasons that Naukratite pottery began to be made before the end of the seventh century, citing finds from the Greek settlement at Naukratis and the reign of Psamtek.
